ZERO HARM 2015

Anjeed Innova Group’s ZERO HARM Pledge is at the heart of all we do. In 2015 we kept our corporate social responsibility commitment to go beyond personnel safety, to empower West Africa’s people, develop communities, and preserve the environment to enrich the lives of future generations.

We hit the ground running in 2015 with Anjeed Kafanchan Solar, the Kunak Foundation and other efforts to develop renewable energy in Nigeria’s deregulated power sector to effectively and responsibly meet the nation’s economic and social needs. We suffered a great loss in March with the unexpected passing of Major General Ishaya Bakut (rtd), our Vice-Chairman; we carry on the legacy of his belief in the dignity of all people and his understanding of the need to increase available resources to improve lives and communities, particularly those caught in a cycle of poverty.

We started off the year with the Kafanchan Project receiving approval from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to expand to 100MW evacuation through connection to the 132kV NIPP Substation-Kafanchan. Anjeed Kafanchan Solar Senior Site Manager Emmanuel Waje led three dig teams of local youths to examine and test the area required for a 100MW site. They safely collected necessary samples and measurements while conducting six soil depth tests over the course of two days. The results are critical for responsible Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) certification.

It is always our goal to minimize negative impact on the environment while maximizing positive effects for people and communities.

In August, Anjeed conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consisting of more than 40 tests. Leaders from project-area LGAs attended; and Nigeria Police, the Kaduna Environmental Protection Agency (KEPA) and the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KASUPDA) verified tests were carried out in line with Federal environmental standards. Senior Site Manager Emmanuel Waje, with KEPA and KASUPDA, ensured the assessment was conducted according to the highest international standards. The results provided a baseline that must be maintained throughout the life of the Project. It is Anjeed’s intent that every project improve on all baselines.

A new EIA was necessitated by the redesign for a vital scale-up of the Kafanchan Project. The scale-up has delayed groundbreaking but the new design and timeline for the Project will provide reliable power for thousands more Nigerians sooner. A 3D video of the planned facility allows interested parties to see what the solar power-generating facility will look like, as they envision its economic and environmental benefits.

As local youths participated in the testing of the 100MW site, they have also been involved in other aspects of the Project’s pre-construction work, as have adults from the area. On occasions Anjeed personnel have provided tours of the site, we have each time been impressed by the turnout and support expressed. As is standard practice for Anjeed projects, the Anjeed Kafanchan Project will hire and train local unskilled laborers during the building phase, and train community members to be involved in operation and management of the new facility. The community is anxious for construction to begin. Community support has been high from the start. Everyone will benefit as we establish reliable access to clean, renewable energy to light their homes, and power schools, clinics and hospitals.

For Anjeed Innova Group CEO Gideon Nyan, the question is not “How long will this project last?” but “How will this project positively impact the community?” Project sustainability is not judged by longevity but by legacy. “The 100MW Anjeed Kafanchan Solar Project is vital to the development of our people, without energy we cannot build infrastructure and without infrastructure we cannot have social development.”

Anjeed’s approach to development in Kafanchan is not merely to construct a reliable grid-connected solar power plant and provide long-term employment for locals, but to also give people within the Project area transferable skills to sustain regional growth, while building and strengthening education and health care systems. Few organizations have successfully combined social agenda with commercial agenda. We hope to change this in West Africa with our pioneering non-profit arm, the Kunak Foundation.

Over the course of the year, the Kunak Foundation continued to seek funding to complete much-needed grassroots social development projects. Continued efforts to improve the condition of medical facilities in the area to ensure access to sufficient health care are among upcoming projects.

We were blessed to win a $100,000 United States African Development Foundation (USADF) Power Africa Off-Grid Energy Challenge Grant for our innovative Yakowa Market Project. The grant will allow the Kunak Foundation to build the first solar-powered market building in an African marketplace. The sanitary, self-sufficient meat and fish vendor building’s modular design will allow an unlimited number of specially-outfitted buildings for other types of vendors to be built and connected, creating an independent power grid. Market expansion and connection to the island system can be achieved without any major redesign or electrical work to existing structures. An integrated water system and central drainage system ensure a high level of cleanliness and sanitation. This Project has the potential to improve the way business is done in markets throughout West Africa. SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH recently announced it will step up its level of support for their equipment previously promised to the Project.
In social and renewable energy development, Anjeed Innova Group consistently proves its ability to work locally while thinking globally, creating international partnerships to ensure continued improvement of Nigeria’s infrastructure. All Anjeed partnerships are designed and implemented in line with our ZERO HARM mandate. We are uniquely equipped to lead renewable energy development for the benefit of all Nigerians.

In 2015, our partnership with award-winning global power system technology specialist SMA continued as the Kafanchan Project was upgraded to the MV Power Station 2000SC equipped with SMA’s powerful Sunny Central 1000CP XT invertors. In December 2015, SMA was voted the most preferred inverter brand in the world for the fourth time. The role of solar power plants in global electricity production is expanding rapidly, and partnering with industry leaders keeps the Anjeed Kafanchan Solar Project on the cutting edge of photovoltaic (PV) technology.

In October, engineering giant Siemens came onboard the Kafanchan Project. Their high-voltage prefabricated modular substation is the perfect plug & play solution to complement the world-leading solar industry technology components of the project, including REC Solar PV panels and Schletter mounting system. NXPLUS fixed-mounted circuit-breaker switchgear is cost-efficient, and Siemens takes pride in their responsibility to ensure the safety of their equipment.

In partnership with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) Nigerain Energy Support Programme (NESP), an Anjeed Innova team completed the assessment and analysis of the rural electrification needs and processes for four Nigerian states. The team spent three weeks traveling with GIZ NESP staff and consultants throughout Ogun, Plateau, Sokoto and Cross River; and Anjeed experts participated in and led meetings with key Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The energy sector is a fundamental issue in German-Nigerian relations, as the German government seeks to improve access to sustainable energy in Nigeria. An important aspect of their goal is support of rural electrification programs and on-grid renewable energy projects.

In all that Anjeed Innova Group has accomplished in 2015, our Projects have suffered no injuries or loss of life, and we have caused no damage to our precious environment. When God created the world, He made man and woman in His image; and all His work was good.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth… And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. Genesis 1:26, 31
At Anjeed Innova Group, we accept, value and honor our responsibility to care for God’s creation and people, in everything we do. Our unique and powerful integration of social and commercial development will create a strong and sustainable future.
